5 out of 5 stars Great supplement to pool lessons   August 11, 2010
Cue Chief

As a BCA and ACS Certified instructor I would highly recommend this book and video as a supplement to pool lessons. I do not recommend any one type of training as a cure all. I believe reading good material, viewing videos, practice, training with an instructor and competing all have merit and when used together, will form a training program that is unbeatable. Picture Yourself Shooting Pool will supplement any training program. Matt is an excellent instructor and creates intense personal intrest early in the book. Matts descriptions are easy to understand and he uses excellent analogies that are interesting and easy to relate to. He doesn't bore you with unnecessary details that would put the average reader to sleep. The title is right - you can actually "Picture Yourself Shooting Pool" The pacakage was also put together to make it affordable to the average player. I'm still learning the game myself and every tool that I can add to by tool box that helps to improve my game and my ability to teach is a good investment - this book does both. Thanks Matt.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Has Really Helped My Game   March 10, 2010
Mark W. Dickenson
I just started playing in January of this yr(its now March) at the local dive bar where there are some really experienced players

Fortunatley, I made friends with them and so they invited me to start playing pool with them

Well, I didn't play much in college so I just did what everyone else seemed to do...elbow high etc

Obviously, my upper arm would start to fatigue after playing a long time

So I got this book...and in the past month, people that have been playing for 30 yrs are telling me
that they cannot believe how much I have improved

I have sank the 8 quite a few times because now my shot is straight...and because we usually play teams, I can now hold my own...and have hit quite a few game winners

If I miss, it is usually due to my aim(lining up the shot wrong)

I like not having to worry about my elbow which was always on my mind before

I just line up the shot, relax my shooting arm, get down, and toss

Also, having the cue to my side seems much more natural...so that was a very easy adjustment

My bank shots need work...but my main goal at this point was to get my stroke straight...it wasn't before

If you follow this guide, you will improve...Fast

-Mark

5 out of 5 stars Matt Sherman is a great instructor   December 13, 2009

2 out of 5 stars Includes some misinformation   September 10, 2009

Unfortunately this book has some of the standard misinformation that appears in too many pool books and videos. For example the author states that the upper arm and forearm should form a 90 degree (or so) angle; this is often repeated in pool instruction books but is not necessarily a good guide - the real requirement is to have the pool cue and your forearm form a 90 degree angle at the point when the cue tip is at the ball. Upper arm position is based on body position or how close your getting your head to the cue. For examples of top professionals who aren't even close to 90 degrees between upper and forearms check out Mike Schimdt, Efren Reyes, Jennette Lee, Gabe Owens, Jose Parica, Nick Varner (the list goes on).

Using a "punch" for draw is another amusing concept.

For those looking for instruction check out the BCA's list of billiard instructors - there's probably one near you. An good instructor can, in a short period, help more then any book will ever. A BCA Master Instructor or Billiard Academy (such as the Pool School in Texas) will definitely improve your game.
