Product Description
A comprehensive guide to the world of mergers and acquisitions

Why do so many M&A transactions fail? And what drives the success of those deals that are consummated? Robert Bruner explains that M&A can be understood as a response by managers to forces of turbulence in their environment. Despite the material failure rates of mergers and acquisitions, those pulling the trigger on key strategic decisions can make them work if they spend great care and rigor in the development of their M&A deals. By addressing the key factors of M&A success and failure, Applied Mergers and Acquisitions can help readers do this. Written by one of the foremost thinkers and educators in the field, this invaluable resource teaches readers the art and science of M&A valuation, deal negotiation, and bargaining, and provides a framework for considering tradeoffs in an effort to optimize the value of any M&A deal. Applied Mergers and Acquisitions is part of a complete suite of resources on M&A that includes a workbook and a CD-ROM with additional spreadsheets.

Robert F. Bruner, MBA, DBA (Charlottesville, VA), is the Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School at the University of Virginia and Executive Director of the Batten Institute. He directs the Darden School's executive education course on mergers and acquisitions, and teaches the popular MBA elective on that topic. He holds a BA from Yale University, and a MBA and DBA from Harvard University.0471395064 A comprehensive guide to the world of mergers and acquisitions 0471395064 A comprehensive guide to the world of mergers and acquisitions

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book on M&A   February 9, 2009

Bruner's book, while pricey, is an excellent textbook on M&A. His bibliography and command of the literature are encyclopedic. His coverage of topics and focus on process are thorough and smart. He provides an admirably pragmatic perspective that combines theory - such as it is - with practice and case studies. The exhibits are detailed (almost overwhelming) and his summary takeaway stances (of often contradictory study results from the literature) are well-reasoned, plausible, and very helpful. All in all, a very impressive guide to a complex topic.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I have ever read   January 2, 2009

Some might think the title of this review is an overstatement. It's not. This is the best book I have ever read in terms of education, usefulness, ease of use, and fun. Anyone considering investment banking or who is interested in finance must read this book.

Because the book without the cd is significantly cheaper, I originally bought the book without the CD. Dont make that mistake. After reading about the contents of the CD in the book, I bought the version including the CD.

Although the CD is wonderful, and is easily worth the $100 extra charge, it leaves room for improvement. First, there is no formatting applied. Second, there is no comprehensive model that incorporates all the valuation methods into one workbook. (There is a four worksheet model that is very good however). Third, the due diligence checklist is not included on the CD. That said, this book-CD combination is a must have for anyone who is even remotely interested in finance.

5 out of 5 stars I needed it for school and the CD-ROM waas a huge help.   March 21, 2008

I needed this book for business school, but our student store did not have the copy with the CD-ROM. Purchasing the book with the disc was a huge plus. It has very helpful examples and exercises of some pretty intimidating math.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book, Very Good and Expensive CD   November 26, 2007

This is the most complete book on M&A. I got the CD version that costs alot more. The content on the CD is good. But, if you dont want to spend money on the cd, the no-cd edition will make your day anyways
