PureVoice

In today’s connected home environment with Internet file sharing, video streaming, on-line gaming, Ooma’s PureVoice Technology delivers clear audio even if substandard calling conditions exist. Ooma PureVoice Technology is composed of four key components.

Advanced Voice Compression

Ooma uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that reduces bandwidth consumption by 60% over standard VoIP technology. That leaves you with more bandwidth for all other online activities and increases the likelihood that your voice traffic will be delivered properly by your ISP.

Wire-speed QoS

Even though Ooma uses only a fraction of the bandwidth of standard VoIP technology, preserving voice quality requires that those packets arrive on time. The Ooma Telo prioritizes voice packets without slowing down the rest of your network. This way you can enjoy crystal clear calls even as you're uploading your latest video clips.

Adaptive Redundancy

Packet loss is the enemy of VoIP - it can cause voice to sound stuttered or garbled. The Ooma Telo detects packet loss on your Internet connection and automatically sends redundant packets to boost the clarity of your phone call.

Encrypted Calls

Ooma takes your privacy seriously. We use the same encryption technology governments use to protect classified data to protect your conversations. This makes Ooma even more secure than the traditional landline.

Discover Ooma Premier

If you want to add a bundle of enhanced calling features that will get your home phone service firing on all cylinders, Ooma Telo includes a free 60-day trial to Ooma Premier, a suite of enhanced calling features. You can also add Ooma Premier to your service for $9.99/month or $119.99/year. If you sign up for a year, you'll have the option of retaining your current telephone number for free ($39.99 value), or receiving a free HD handset ($49.99 value). See the chart below for a full list of Ooma Premier features.
ooma Premier Subscription Features:
  • Advanced Voicemail Options for voicemail forwarding and added privacy
  • Instant Second Line for large households with busy phone lines
  • Personal Numbers for all family members so you'll always know who a call is for
  • Call Blocking and Community Blacklist to help rid yourself of persistent telemarketers

And for added privacy, you'll have the option of making any Ooma device a private extension.

Instant Second Line
If you share your house with a phone hog, Ooma's Instant Second Line feature presents a solution for you. When the line is already in use, you can simply pick up a second Ooma Handset and get a fresh dial tone. Up to two separate calls can be made simultaneously.

Program unique numbers and ring sounds for everyone in the family.
Personal Number
With an affordable Ooma Premier subscription, you gain access to the Personal Number feature. This feature allows you to create a unique phone number for everyone in the family. Multiple numbers can be mapped to the same handset, but you can make each number ring distinctively so you know who the call is for. Up to nine additional numbers are allowed.

Add Unwanted Callers to Your Blacklist
Ooma allows you to instantly add unwanted callers to your blocked list. If telemarketers are harassing you, use ooma Lounge to add them to your blacklist. You'll have the option to block future calls completely or send them straight to voicemail. The choice is yours.

Blacklist unwanted callers with Ooma Premier.
Community Blacklist
Harness the power of the Ooma community and protect yourself from unwanted callers before they've even tried to call you. If enough Ooma users have blocked a certain caller, Ooma will add this caller to the community blacklist. Combine this with Ooma's special spam-detecting algorithms, and you've got the ultimate telemarketer blacklist.

Multi-Ring
Constantly on the go? Multi-Ring takes call forwarding to the next level. Configure your Ooma number to simultaneously ring your home phone and mobile phone at the same time. Whether you're at home or on the road, you'll never miss a call.

Three-way Conference Calls
Need to make dinner plans with two of your friends? Ooma's got you covered. Once you're on a call, press the second-line button to make or take a second call. Press down both line buttons at once, and you've got yourself a conference call.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent voice quality and reliability, for free   September 10, 2010
GA (Massachusetts, USA)

It is beyond belief that anyone is still paying a monthly bill for a home telephone, when services like Ooma are now available. If you hesitate, like I did, because of skepticism about the quality of the service, then this is a service well worth trying. My main concern was about voice quality, which I have found to be outstanding, even better than At&T's land line. The service is as reliable as your internet connection, so if you don't already have a good service, you may want to invest in one (with the help of your newly found savings).

The included features are superior to those of a traditional land line: voicemail (you can retrieve it from anywhere, including online), talking calle-ID, and excellent long distance rates.

This is a product/service that I easily recommend to friends.

2 out of 5 stars Very long delays (although voice quality good) makes conversations very difficult.   September 9, 2010

The OOMA base unit is big and ugly.

The call quality is good but has extrememly long delays (getting on for a second) that make holding conversations very difficult.

The fee per month for many of the features is poor value compared to alternives out there.

Noticable background hum (implying poor electronic layout or design).

What I liked:

Being able to keep a landline with the same number as the ooma, incoming calls come in on the landline (and through the ooma) but outgoing calls go over the ooma VOIP.

I cancelled service and am returning the unit because of the terrible long delays. Support sounded like it was in India with a room full of people talking so loud and additionally call quality problems (!!) making it very hard to even talk with support.

I have also PhonePower which has many of the OOMA features (such as two lines on the same number) included for free and for a two year prepaid deal costs much less with no monthly fees and includes some international calls for free. I recommend PhonePower.

5 out of 5 stars what an awesome product and service   September 9, 2010

How awesome is this phone! I've had it a week now and it works great. Call quality is perfect, no different than land line. Setup was super easy. Website is great. Voicemail is a snap. I can't say enough about it. So cool that's its free (except taxes and 911 fee). I was paying around 40 bucks a month for nationwide calling so this thing will pay for itself in 6 months and give me free phone service forever. Can't wait to "fire my phone company" as they put it :-)

Couple of pointers for others:
1. Make sure you have all the phone and the internet cable plugged in first before you plug in the power, otherwise the logo blinks red a little longer while it attempts to configure itself. The device will set itself up quicker if those connections are already established when it begins to startup for the first time.
2. They suggest putting it in between your cable modem (or DSL) and router so it can guarantee its data will have priority over any other internet data to keep call quality perfect. However, this was not an option for me as my modem and router are not in an accessible place so I had to plug it into the router after both of those devices. I am a technical person and was able to tell my router to give the Ooma device priority, but I'm not sure that even matters as most newer routers (last 5 yrs or so) can automatically figure out which data (or devices in this case) need priority.

4 out of 5 stars Ooma Telo so far so good   September 8, 2010
Warren F. Clift (CA, USA)
Bottom line it works. I am thrilled to be getting away from the greed of "a large phone company" that we have used forever. Ooma works without slowing down your PC at all. Clarity is excellent. Set up was super easy. I opted for the basic service so no more bills aside from monthly taxes which will be about $3.50 for me. I prepaid a seperate overseas calling plan which gives me England for an insane .0034 per minute and connections so far have been fine.
Messages are forwarded to a couple of emails so you know if you have messages to tend to. You allocate another number to get calls forwarded when and if internet is down. Ooma should pay for itself in 5 months for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bought the New Telo unit.   September 7, 2010

My sister has had an Ooma for over a year now without a single problem or complaint. Because of her experience, I bought one myself (the new Telo unit). Simply take every five star rating on Amazon for Ooma and add a big Ditto, from me. I cannot improve on all the other nice things that have been said. Ooma does exactly what it was designed to do and it does it amazingly well.
