IMAH FIRIN MAH LAZOR!!!!!! September 7, 2010 Matthew P. This is an amazing laser!!! And even better for the price! Out of the box it cannot burn anything and it generates almost no heat. It doesn't seem to have many defects if any others besides a wobbly button and a less-than-smooth screwing-in and unscrewing process when changing the batteries. One thing to look for is the focus on the laser itself, because It seems to very slowly decline in quality after about 2-4 hors of use. It can be readjusted with a little work though! Very nice quality, and works great in daytime and simply spectacular at night!
worked great until it stopped September 5, 2010 Tony Miller (Palm Springs,CA) Hello, I bought this for my son's 13th birthday, and it was awesome for the first minute. Then it just stopped working. after waiting 7 hours overnight, it worked for about 3 seconds. It does say it has 30 day warranty, so I'll see what I can do. Any idea what happened?
WOW September 5, 2010 Matt2851 This has to be one of the best lasers ever!! No problems what so ever and wow is it far!!
Very bright, inexpensive laser pointer September 5, 2010 Akubra Dude (Richardson, TX USA) This pointer has been an excellent value for the price. Although it isn't as useful in some of the venues for which I had hoped, I am still getting a lot of use out of it.
I should mention what I am using this pointer for: pointing. I am not trying pop balloons, melt electrical tape, light matches, or burn skin; I am trying to get my audience to quickly focus on the object I am talking about. That object may be a chart projected on a lecture hall screen, a plant along a nature trail, or a star in the sky. (I can't figure why some reviewers insist on giving products low ratings because the item is not able to do things it is not advertised to do. A buyer's unrealistic expectations are not the seller's fault!)
One bone of contention for several reviewers is that this laser pointer does not meet the 50mw power output rating. This has not been a problem for me for two reasons. First is because all I care about is the perceived brightness of the pointer's "dot" on the object by the audience. I needed it to be more visible in a moderately bright room, than most of the red laser pointers. The room I was frequently lecturing in was a public school cafetorium which had large windows for sunlight and fluorescent lighting that remained on during my talks. The red pointers I had been using were almost overpowered by the lighting and I had to hold the pointer very still before the students could "find" the red dot on the screen. This pointer creates a very bright green dot that is easily visible from the back. The second reason is that this item is only a few dollars more than laser pointers rated at a fifth of its rating. Therefore, it really wouldn't matter to me if I eventually found out the laser's output was less than half the advertised price since it achieves my desired goals.
Actually this pointer overachieves in brightness for one of my needs. I intended to also use this in standard conference room settings; a dimly lit room of less than 50 people. However, because everyone's eyes have adapted to the lower lighting levels, this laser's dot appears to be an intensely bright, almost "blazing" point of light on a standard projection screen. I had many complaints that it was painfully bright and my manager actually told me to no longer use it. Therefore, for inside use, I am pretty much limited to larger, brightly lit rooms.
Because it is so bright, I am able to use it in a setting I hadn't thought of when I bought it. Now when I go walking with people on shaded nature trails (like you find in state parks), I use this handy laser to easily point out an interesting plant, insect, or other object that is well off the trail. This avoids the old way of having people bunch up next to me trying to follow where my finger is pointing. Speaking of use outside, saying this is an astronomy pointer is accurate. I am not an avid star gazer but this device has really been handy when out with my family. Now "the 3rd star to the right" is easily found with a visible beam reaching into the night sky. The visibility of the beam is dependent on several factors. One of the most important is amount of airborne particulates (e.g. dust, pollution, moisture). These particulates reflect a small fraction of the light back to viewer. North central Texas, with its humidity, urban areas, and wind, has plenty of airborne particulates! On a moonless night, you get a distinctly visible beam stabbing into the night sky. It should be noted that this effect falls off quickly for observers standing a distance from the person using the pointer. If you are twenty feet away, you may have difficultly seeing the beam.
As far as problems with batteries, I haven't had any. A good pair of name brand alkalines work adequately, but I am currently using Energizer Ultimate Lithiums which I find extremely dependable. I am not surprised by the shorter battery life either. I already expected a laser rated at 50mw to go through batteries faster than one rated at 5mw. You wouldn't expect a car with a V8 to get the same mpg as one with a 4-cylinder.
Another complaint of some reviewers is weakening of the beam after after a few minutes of use. I am wondering if they mean a few minutes of continuous use. The manual states that the unit should not be used more than 30 seconds at a time. (it suggests a 10 second pause between uses.) This is because the heat build up can degrade the diode's performance and reduce its life-span. Once again, this is not one of the low-power units that make up the majority of the ones in use, yet it is still packaged in a pocket-size form factor.
The only other disappointment is with the labeling and quality control. My pointer came without a warning label. A Class IIIb laser really needs a label. This class of laser can cause eye damage much faster than the blink reflex can protect against. The packaging seems constantly different. Although quite nice, my case was different than either of the two shown on the Amazon website. Also, there were no batteries included with mine even though the foam insert had two spaces for them.
Overall, I would recommend this product unless you only need it for small darkened conference rooms.
Great Laser September 3, 2010 Rudy Ploder This laser is really worth it for the money spent. For this small fee I got blazing shipping and a cool laser. This laser is perfect for gifts and is very potent. The case quality is adequate and is made out of cardboard like material. I have not felt any heat coming off this item and it is solid. Bottom line it is a great buy
